Georgian parliament sets up ad hoc commission to scrutinize August events

TBILISI. Sept 26 (Interfax-AVN) - The Georgian parliament unanimously endorsed a decision to set up an ad hoc commission to analyze the August events at a plenary session on Friday.

"This commission is supposed to provide answers to any question from the public," parliamentary Chairman David Bakradze said.

The commission will be comprised of an equal number of members from the parliamentary majority and the opposition and will be led by an opposition member.

President Mikheil Saakashvili had earlier vowed that he, as well as other government officials, were prepared to answer all questions related to the August events.

Georgia launched a massive military operation "to restore constitutional order" in the breakaway province of South Ossetia in August 2008. After Russian troops intervened, Georgian armed forces were ousted from South Ossetia. Russia later recognized South Ossetia and another Georgian breakaway province, Abkhazia, as independent states.
