NATO starts exercise in Armenia

YEREVAN. Sept 29 (Interfax-AVN) - NATO has begun the Cooperative Longbow/Lancer 2008 command post exercise as part of its Partnership For Peace program.

The goal of the exercise is to improve cooperation between NATO members and partner nations in responding to crises under the United Nations mandate, said deputy commander of NATO's Land Component Command - Heidelberg Lt. Gen. John Gardner.

Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey are not taking part in the exercise, he said.

Servicemen from 16 countries are in Armenia to participate in the exercise that will be held in two stages until October 20.
