Russia will enhance defense capacity changed intl conditions – president

MOSCOW. Oct 1 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia will enhance its defense capacity in order to protect its sovereignty and democracy, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said.

"The current mechanism of collective security has seriously failed. That is why together with political actions on the international arena, we will enhance the defense capacity of our country. We must securely protect Russian democracy and the country's sovereignty, as well as people's right to a peaceful life," Medvedev told a ceremony of bestowing awards on Russian soldiers who fought in South Ossetia in the Kremlin on Wednesday.

"Today, we can clearly see something else: a world where peacekeepers are fired on, while regular armies are in fact involved in ethnic cleansing, a world where criminal regimes get protection and information on the reality of situations is blocked. This world is absolutely insecure," the president said.

"Few could have believed before the August 8 events that the whole international community can see that a full-scale military adventure, whose goal is to eradicate the whole people, underway," the president said.
