Pre-launch period for 2nd phase in chemical weapons disposal facility in Kirov region to be over by March

KIROV. Oct 1 (Interfax-AVN) - The Kirov regional Commission for Chemical Weapons Disposal has considered the readiness of the Maradykovsky facility for the launch of its second phase in March 2009, the regional government reported on Tuesday.

The second phase is to be used to eliminate ammunition filled with sarin and saman.

The Maradykovsky chemical weapons disposal facility is currently eliminating VX agent in the remaining ammunition. Concurrently, equipment is being assembled at all facilities to be used in eliminating sarin and saman. Start-and-adjustment operations are to begin on December 1 2008 to last until March 2009, the regional government said.

Launch documentation is being drawn up and personnel are undergoing training in handling the new equipment and in mastering new methods of spotting sarin and saman in the air.
