ST. PETERSBURG. Oct 2 (Interfax-AVN) - A new binding treaty on European security is needed, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said.
"The system of international security is now undergoing a fundamental transformation. It is a very difficult and vital stage," Medvedev said at the Russian-German interstate consultations on Thursday.
"For this reason, we are considering an idea that could be worded by the Russian Federation on a new treaty on European security, which will be binding for everybody," he said.
"Russia would like to make such a treaty that will become an island of stability on the entire European space," said Medvedev.
"This treaty should be based on the principles of international law, the balance of the interests of all states, naturally, without replacing other integration associations, other organizations and blocs that exist on the European continent," he said.
Germany's opinion on this is very important to Russia because this country is one of the most respected and responsible partners of the Russian Federation, Medvedev said.
