Man suspected of belonging to illegal armed groups detained in Nalchik

NALCHIK. Oct 6 (Interfax-AVN) - Police detained a man suspected of belonging to an illegal armed group in Nalchik and seized weapons and an improvised explosive device from him, the general information center for the Kabardian-Balkarian law enforcement and security agencies told Interfax on Saturday.

Organized crime police detained a 26-year-old man suspected of belonging to illegal armed groups during a search operation at Nalchik's bus station No. 1 on Friday, the center said. "During his personal search, police found and seized a PSM handgun with a silencer, whose serial number had been erased, and nine cartridges," it said.

"In the course of the following sanctioned search at his house in Nalchik, an improvised explosive device equivalent to 1 kilo of TNT was found and seized," it said.

The explosive device was made out of a rubber pipe filled with an explosive substance and stuffed with metal balls 8-10 mm in diameter, it said.

In addition, police found a jar with metal powder, which is usually used as a component of an explosive device, a sleeping bag, and a number of mobile phones with various SIM cards. All these articles have yet to undergo analysis, the center said.

The man has been arrested, and an investigation is underway, the center said.
