MOSCOW. Oct 6 (Interfax-AVN) - The UN should investigate why the Ukrainian vessel the Faina, recently seized by pirates near the Somali coast, was transporting a large amount of banned weapons and military hardware and who was the consignee, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"As regards weapons supplies in violation of direct bans imposed by the Security Council, this is not a subject that Russia should look into. The Security Council has special mechanisms aimed at follow the observance of these bans, and these mechanisms should be applied to find out who was transporting the banned armor, why, for whom, and how this can be explained. This is a serious issue," Lavrov told journalists while returning to Moscow from Yerevan.
