Pacific fleet to be strengthened with new warships, nuclear subs - admiral

Moscow. Oct 7 (Interfax-AVN) - The Northern Fleet's nuclear-powered submarine Ryazan, which arrived at Kamchatka on September 30, has joined the Pacific Fleet, said Admiral Alexander Tatarinov, the chief of the Russian Navy's main headquarters.

"The nuclear submarine Ryazan has covered such a long way under the Arctic ice without surfacing, from the Northern Fleet to Kamchatka, to strengthen the Pacific Fleet, not just for effect. This submarine will be permanently based in Vilyuchinsk," Tatarinov told Interfax-AVN.

The Pacific Fleet will be further strengthened with new types of multi purpose warships, including new-generation nuclear-powered submarines and corvettes, he said.

"The Pacific Fleet will acquire a combat-efficient grouping of warships and submarines, and other means and forces to protect the country in the Pacific Ocean," the admiral said.
