Russian peacekeepers back from Abkhazia

YEKATERINBURG. Oct 20 (Interfax-AVN) - The first train carrying servicemen of the 15th motorized infantry peacekeeping brigade arrived in the Krasny Kryazhok station in the Samara region from Abkhazia on Monday.

"The peacekeepers were pulled out in line with international agreements and the ordinance of the Russian supreme commander," Volga-Urals military district spokesman Konstantin Lazutkin told Interfax-AVN.

All the servicemen of the brigade were recruited by contract, he noted.

The servicemen were deployed in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict zone in December 2005. They were based in Gali and serviced two checkpoints in the Kodori Gorge and the Gali lowlands.

The peacekeepers patrolled the conflict zone, cooperated with local authorities and the UN mission and gave protection to builders repairing a motorway in the Kodori Gorge. "Their activity promoted the return of refugees and regional stabilization," Lazutkin said.

Peacekeeping operations were the focus of the brigade since the moment of its establishment, he said.
