MOSCOW. Oct 29 (Interfax-AVN) - Leftover facilities from the implementation of the Russian federal program for the disposal of chemical weapons could further be used for civilian economic needs, Andrei Shevchenko, the head of a research and technological center of the Federal Department for the Safe Storage and Disposal of Chemical Weapons, told journalists.
"Efforts are being made now to redesign the industrial facilities, which are being used for the purposes of the special federal program for the disposal of chemical weapons. They should be used for government needs in the interests of defense and national security purposes. These facilities could be passed into to regional control in line with investment projects and be used for economic needs," Shevchenko said at a public hearing in Moscow dealing with Russia's implementation of its commitments under the Chemical Weapons Convention.
If these facilities remain unclaimed, "everything will be determined by the market," he said.
