Outlawed Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghrib acted in Northern Caucasus

MOSCOW. Nov 13 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian ban on Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghrib is a contribution by Moscow in international anti- terrorist cooperation, Special Representative of the Russian President for International Cooperation in the Suppression of Terrorism and Organized Crime Anatoly Safonov told Interfax on Thursday.

"This organization is one of the active outlets of Al Qaeda. Despite its 'regional' name, the organization has terrorist connections worldwide," he said.

The organization has acted in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Russian Northern Caucasus, Safonov said.

"Our decision has been supported by countries, which have experienced an impact of that organization - Spain, France and other European nations and Maghrib states, including Morocco and Algeria," Safonov said.

The Russian Supreme Court has outlawed Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghrib as a terrorist organization.

The judgment was passed by request of the Russian prosecutor general submitted this September, Office spokesperson Marina Gridneva told Interfax.

"The judgment will add the aforesaid organization to the federal list of terrorist entities," she said.
