Pacific Fleet ships may be engaged in fighting pirates near Africa - source

MOSCOW. Dec 4 (Interfax-AVN) - A group of Russian Pacific Fleet vessels led by the antisubmarine ship Admiral Vinogradov should head for the African Horn area to provide security of navigation following the Indra 2009 joint exercises with India.

"Such plans are being worked on," a Moscow-based military diplomatic source told Interfax on Thursday.

"Both Pacific Fleet ship crews and marines are perfectly trained for resolving various combat problems, including the protection of navigation and combat with marine pirates and terrorists," the source said.

The Pacific Fleet vessels are scheduled to depart from Vladivostok for joint maneuvers with India on December 9. The naval group includes the Admiral Vinogradov, two tankers, and a towboat.
