Georgian party says has started action to impeach president

TBILISI. Jan 19 (Interfax-AVN) - A Georgian opposition leader said on Friday that his party had embarked on proceedings to seek the impeachment of President Mikheil Saakashvili, who "has committed numerous home and foreign policy mistakes that have jeopardized the statehood of Georgia and have led to losses of territory and democracy."

"The parliamentary group of our party has started the necessary proceedings. The leaders of countries that are friendly to us must be aware of what exact charges are brought in the document on the impeachment of the president," Labor Party leader Shalva Natelashvili told reporters.

Natelashvili had a meeting on Friday with foreign diplomats posted in Georgia at which he set out the party's plan to seek the president's impeachment.

"Not a single civilized nation would leave a leader such as Saakashvili as the head of state," the Labor leader said. "The people of Georgia will not leave Saakashvili at the head of Georgia. But let this happen in a peaceful way, via impeachment."

Natelashvili expressed hope that other opposition groups would rally to the impeachment initiative.
