Russia's Federation Council denies decision to make military base in Ochamchira

MOSCOW. Jan 27 (Interfax-AVN) - No decision has yet been made to create a Black Sea naval base in Ochamchira, Abkhazia, said Viktor Ozerov, chairman of the Federation Council's committee on defense and security.

"As far as I know, the General Staff and other structures have not yet raised the issue of creating a Black Sea naval base in Ochamchira," Ozerov told Interfax on Tuesday.

The agreement signed by Russia and Abkhazia "talks about the creation of a Russian military base in Gudauta," Ozerov stressed.

On Monday, some media reported, citing sources in the Russian General Staff, that Russia will begin building a Black Sea military base in the Abkhaz port of Ochamchira in 2009.
