TBILISI. Feb 10 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgia on Tuesday proposed complete demilitarization of Abkhazia, an arrangement where Russia would withdraw its troops from the republic and Georgia would pledge not to move its own troops into the republic.
"While Russia is planning to set up military bases in Abkhazia, we have an initiative to declare Abkhazia a weapons-free zone," Minister of State for Reintegration Temur Iakobashvili told reporters.
The initiative implies that that there would be no Russian armed forces in Abkhazia while "we would pledge not to move our own troops into Abkhazia," Iakobashvili said.
Iakobashvili argued that stationing an international police force in Abkhazia would be the best option.
