No plans to increase duration of draft military service - Duma deputy

MOSCOW. Feb 11 (Interfax-AVN) - There are no plans to change the duration of draft service at the Russian armed forces, Viktor Zavarzin, the head of the State Duma defense committee, told Interfax.

"There is no bill under the State Duma's consideration that would suggest somehow amending the duration of draft military service," Zavarzin said.

The duration of draft military service is stipulated by a relevant law, "and it can be changed only through the passage of a relevant federal bill," he said.

A number of media outlets reported earlier that proposals on increasing the current 12-month draft military service to 1.5 years were made at a Monday meeting at the Russian Defense Ministry, in which a number of State Duma deputies took part.

"This was only a private opinion of one of the deputies," a participant in the meeting, which was closed to the press, told Interfax.
