OSCE observers illegally enter South Ossetia – republic’s Defense Ministry

TSKHINVALI. Feb 11 (Interfax-AVN) - A car carrying monitors of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe mission in Georgia crossed the border between South Ossetia and Georgia on Wednesday morning, a spokesman for the South Ossetian Defense Ministry told Interfax.

"The OSCE observers' car crossed South Ossetia's border in the vicinity of Artsev village. Their entry was registered by an observation post of the South Ossetian Defense Ministry. After South Ossetian servicemen present at the post tried to stop the car with representatives of the OSCE mission, it made a U-turn and hurriedly left the territory of South Ossetia," the spokesman said.

According to earlier reports, South Ossetian policemen detained two OSCE observers for illegally crossing the republic's border on Tuesday. They were identified and ordered to leave South Ossetia.

"Attempts made by OSCE and EU observers to trespass the state border of South Ossetia have become systematic recently, which has added to tensions in South Ossetia's border districts and the security zone in Georgia, which is controlled by international monitors," he said.

"Our impression is that, instead of helping restore stability, observers are deliberately complicating the situation and taking measures that provide Georgia with an additional excuse to accuse South Ossetia and Russia of failing to obey the Medvedev-Sarkozy plan," the spokesman said.
