Sevastopol authorities not considering opening of U.S. naval base

MOSCOW. Feb 16 (Interfax-AVN) - Sevastopol Mayor Serhiy Kunytsyn knows nothing of the alleged plans to deploy a U.S. naval base in his city.

"We are not considering the possible deployment of a U.S. naval base in Sevastopol. At least this is not my area and I have never heard about such plans of the Ukrainian president, government and speaker," he told a Monday press conference at the Interfax main office.

It is not planned to open a U.S. office in the city either, the mayor said.

"As far as I know the U.S. ambassador has met with the Crimean Supreme Council Chairman and discussed the opening of a U.S. consulate in Simferopol. As Sevastopol is not subordinated to the Crimean authorities, no negotiations were held with the city administration," he said.
