Militant killed in clash with police in Dagestan

MAKHACHKALA. March 4 (Interfax-AVN) - A suspected member of an illegal armed group was killed in an exchange of fire with police in Dagestan's Sergo-Kala district on Wednesday morning, the Dagestan Interior Ministry told Interfax.

"Police bumped into a group of armed people in woods near the village of Seragi. One of the suspected members of an illegal armed group was killed in subsequent exchange of fire. A Kalashnikov machine gun was seized from him. The area of being combed for his accomplices," the ministry said.

"The dead man is Magomedshakir Magomedov, a resident of the Kayakent district of the republic [of Dagestan]. He had recently been registered as an advocate of a radical and extremist Islamic movement. He is supposed to be a member of the Izberbash sabotage and terrorist group. Probably he covered the retreat of the main group of militants in the woods," the ministry said.
