Disagreements among Ukrainian leaders do country no good - U.S. ambassador

KYIV. March 12 (Interfax-AVN) - Future elections will hopefully solve all the differences between the branches of power in Ukraine so that the domestic situation will improve for the better, United States ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor said.

Speaking before students of the Ukrainian National Prosecution Assembly in Kyiv on Thursday, Taylor said he had been concerned about political in-fighting for several years now, starting from 2005.

Such arguments do not help to make use of certain opportunities, he said.

In particular, differences between Ukraine leaders thwarted judicial reform and had a negative effect on the investment climate, Taylor argued.

If the government, the parliament and the president had cooperated more closely, this would have enabled Ukraine to move faster towards European standards, the ambassador said.

Certain opportunities on that account have been lost, he said.

Restoring confidence in the authorities, the banking sector and an efficient judicial system will help attract foreign investment to Ukraine, the U.S. diplomat said.

Currently, there is a significant lack of confidence in the banking system and no confidence in the hryvnia, which is leading to its fall, he said.

For investors it is very important to see that Ukraine has a mechanism of fair resolution of disputes, namely, an efficient judicial system, Taylor said.

Ukraine has a lot to offer to its investors because it has vast resources, he said. Investors do want to come to the country, but they need confidence and the supremacy of law, he said.
