Barents Rescue 2009 details discussed in Murmansk

MURMANSK. March 19 (Interfax-AVN) - Details of the Barents Rescue 2009 international rescue drill of Russia, Norway, Finland and Sweden due on September 8-10 have been discussed in Murmansk, a source at the Murmansk regional emergency situations department told Interfax.

The exercises will model emergency situations on territories of several countries.

For instance, participants will practice the rescue of a plane from a radioactive waste storage facility, oil tankers colliding in the Kola Bay, and two tourist buses and a truck carrying radioactive cargo that supposedly collide on the Murmansk-Kirkenes road near the state border.

Apart from rescuers, Russia will be represented by the North Fleet, border guards and customs officers.

Barents Rescue has been a biannual event since 2001. The four countries host the exercises in turn. The previous drill was held in Finland in 2007. The program aims to develop cooperation between national emergency situations services.
