Russian, French lawyers hold consultations on Irina Belenkaya case

MOSCOW. April 17 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian and French experts are holding consultations in Moscow on the case involving Russian citizen Irina Belenkaya, who was detained in Budapest and is charged with abducting her own daughter.

"The lawyers are having a meeting. Russia is represented in this meeting by officials from the Foreign Ministry consular department," the Russian Foreign Ministry's information and press department told Interfax.

A Hungarian law court previously ruled to leave Irina Belenkaya, who was detained in Hungary, under arrest for a period of forty days. The woman is charged by the French authorities with involvement in kidnapping her 3-year old daughter Elise Andre from her ex-husband Jean-Michel Andre, a citizen of France.

Irina Belenkaya has refused an eased extradition procedure, and for that reason a court issued an order for her to be kept under arrest until May 25.

Elise Andre, was abducted in France on March 20. Andre suspected his ex-wife of abducting his daughter. At the end of last week, Irina Belenkaya was detained in Hungary while trying to cross the Ukrainian border with her daughter.

Jean-Michel Andre earlier admitted abducting Elise from her mother and taking her from Russia to France in 2008.

The Investigations Committee of the Russian prosecutor's office said it is investigating the abduction of Elise Andre in Moscow in September 2008.

According to the investigators, Elise was abducted by two unknown men on September 22, 2008 as she was out for a walk with her nanny in Moscow.
