Indian trainer plane equipped with Russian engine makes first flight

MOSCOW. May 12 (Interfax-AVN) - The Indian HJT-36 trainer plane flew its first flight with a Russian-made AL-55I engine in the Indian city of Bangalore on Tuesday.

"The flight lasted about 40 minutes, with reaching an altitude of 3,000 meters and a speed 300 kilometers per hour. There were no complaints about the engine during the flight," the Saturm research and production company, the producer of the AL-55I engine, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The engine showed its best qualities, Indian test pilot Baldev Singh said following the flight, the statement says.

The flight was the first in a series of flight certification trials of the HJT-36 equipped with the AL-55I engine, Saturn said. Under a contract with India, Russia now has to provide India with the full set of design documents, it said.
