Security tightened in S. Ossetia ahead of elections

TSKHINVALI. May 19 (Interfax-AVN) - All measures will be taken in South Ossetia to safeguard law and order during the parliamentary election due on May 31, South Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity said.

"I want to assure all that elections will be held at the highest organizational level. No provocation will manage to prevent the people of South Ossetia from making their free choice," Kokoity told the government.

The Interior Ministry personnel will be on alert in connection with the upcoming election, Kokoity said.

The Georgian side has strengthened the personnel manning its checkpoints three times over the week near the border and the border infrastructure has been reinforced as well, said South Ossetia's Defense Minister Yury Tanayev.
