Final result of Russian-U.S. talks on strategic offensive weapons should mark progress - Lavrov

MOSCOW. May 20 (Interfax-AVN) - The final result of Russian-U.S. talks on strategic offensive weapons should be a step forward from the current level of limitations in this area, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"The final result of the negotiations should certainly be a step forward compared to the currently existing regime of limitations," Lavrov said at a press conference following negotiations with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Ali Aboul Gheit in Moscow on Wednesday.

The idea of equal security should be the main principle at these negotiations, he said.

"This definitely cannot be achieved without taking into account the situation in the missile defense area and without taking into account other aspects, such as the possible deployment of weapons in space and plans to produce warheads not armed with nuclear weapons. I hope all these factors will be fully accounted for," Lavrov said.
