MOSCOW. May 27 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak have discussed the North Korean situation by telephone at the South Korean imitative.
The two leaders "exchanged opinions on the situation that is evolving after the North Korean nuclear test and other actions by Pyongyang that lead to the escalation of tensions in the Northeastern Asia," the Kremlin reported on Wednesday.
"The parties also noted that the North Korean nuclear test is a direct violation of the UN SC Resolution 1718 and contradicts international legal norms," the Kremlin said.
It was also stressed that "that Russia and [South] Korea intend to actively take part in working out a new UN Security Council resolution on North Korea and continuing close consultations with partners at the six-party talks on the Korean peninsula nuclear problem," it said.
The South Korean president "hailed Russia's role as UN Security Council chairman in discussing these issues in the UN SC," the Kremlin said.
The parties also discussed the scheduled of upcoming contacts at the highest level, it said.
