No injuries as warship accidentally shoots at village in Leningrad region

MOSCOW. May 29 (Interfax-AVN) - A small anti-submarine vessel, the MPK-192, accidentally fired a burst from an automatic gun in the direction of villages outside St. Petersburg, a spokesman for the Russian Navy's main headquarters said.

"The incident occurred on Thursday during a scheduled firing drill. Happily, none of the residents of the Pesochnoye cottage village in Vyborg district, was hurt," the military spokesman told Interfax-AVN on Friday.

A commission has been formed, comprised of Defense Ministry and Main Headquarters representatives, to investigate the incident, he said.

Meanwhile, a source in the Leningrad region's law enforcement agencies told Interfax, citing a report, received at 4 p.m. on Thursday, that a warship fired about 14 shots with a 100 mm gun from near Cape Flotsky in the Gulf of Finland.

Metal fragments, removed from the scene, have been passed to the military for examination, the source said.
