WASHINGTON. July 2 (Interfax-AVN) - The United States plans to enhance missile defense in Europe and around the world and will not abandon these plans in order to deal with Russia, U.S. presidential adviser on Russia and Eurasia Michael McFaul told a Thursday press conference.
"With regard to missile defense, as you know, we have a review that's underway right now. And the way I understand this review, we want to enhance missile defense in Europe and around the world as it related real threats. And by 'real threats', I mean countries like Iran and not Russia," he said.
"But we also have to do it in ways to make sure that it works," he noted.
"Russia could play a role that would enhance their security, as well," McFaul said.
"And we we're in Moscow, we're going to talk in those terms, not abandoning the third site in order to deal with Russia. We want to enhance European missile defense," he said.
"If you look at the geography, and you look at the assets that they have, we believe that there are things that we could do together that would enhance American security, enhance the security of our European allies, and enhance the security of Russia," the adviser said.
