Black Sea Fleet, Caspian flotilla train deterrence of terrorists, sea pirates

MOSCOW. July 6 (Interfax-AVN) - Ships of the Russian Navy engaged in the Caucasus 2009 exercises are practicing defense at unsheltered roadsteads, North Caucasian military district spokesman Lt. Gen. Andrei Bobrun told Interfax on Monday.

"The naval tactical drill includes joint maneuvering and shooting at sea- and air-based targets," he said.

Vessels of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the Caspian Flotilla and the Novorossiysk naval base are taking part in the exercises.

Small anti-sub ships do the reconnoitering, minesweepers search for mines, and sailors together with paratroopers practice landings, he said.

The North Caucasian military district holds the Caucasus 2009 exercises under the supervision of Russian General Staff Chief Gen. Nikolai Makarov. The exercises will be completed on July 6.
