BEIJING. July 7 (Interfax-AVN) - China welcomes the agreements on strategic offensive arms reductions, reached by Russian and American presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama.
"We welcome the agreements reached," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said at a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.
"The Chinese side hopes that the parties will reach new agreements shortly and make real steps to reduce their nuclear arsenals," the diplomat said.
"In our opinion, Russia and the United States, as countries possessing the largest nuclear arsenals, can gradually reduce their stocks, creating favorable conditions for the complete repudiation of nuclear weapons," he also said.
China has been consistently campaigning for the complete repudiation of nuclear weapons, and it is ready to play an appropriate role in this process together with other countries, Qin said.
Agreements on the parameters of strategic arms reductions were reached on Monday during U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to Moscow.
