Moscow seeks maximum cut in Russian, U.S. warhead delivery means - Lavrov

MOSCOW. July 7 (Interfax-AVN) - Moscow wants the planned new Russian- U.S. agreement on strategic nuclear weapons to cut the number of each nation's means of delivery of nuclear warheads as much as possible, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday, in comments on the Russian-U.S. summit that just finished in Moscow.

Lavrov, who was speaking in a program on Russian television channel Vesti 24, mentioned that a document the Russian and U.S. presidents, Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama, signed during the summit, set the planned numbers of delivery means at between 500 and 1,100 and that of warheads at between 1,500 and 1,675 for each country.

"A balance is to be sought, a parity is to be sought" at future Russian-U.S. talks, Lavrov said.

"Means of delivery are indeed the main thing because, if there are warheads but no means of delivery, there is less possibility of undesirable actions of any kind," he said.

"We want to substantially reduce both the means of delivery and the warheads," Lavrov said.
