New Air Force/Air Defense command formed in southern Russia

MOSCOW. July 13 (Interfax-AVN) - A new Air Force and Air Defense command headquartered in Rostov-on-Don has been created in the course of the armed forces reform, a Defense Ministry source told Interfax-AVN on Monday.

"The new command will incorporate units of the disbanded fourth and fifth armies of the Air Force and the Air Defense," he said.

The fifth army headquartered in Yekaterinburg was giving protection to southern and central regions, while the fourth army headquartered in Rostov-on-Don was covering the Northern Caucasus, the source said.

Air defense brigades and air bases will be formed from units of both armies, he said.

Earlier reports said that the disbanded command of specialized forces (the former Moscow Air Force and Air Defense district) was transformed into the aerospace defense operative and strategic command. These forces protect Moscow and the central economic area of Russia.
