PETROZAVODSK. July 23 (Interfax-AVN) - Law enforcement agencies in the Republic of Karelia have confirmed the death of Andrei Kulagin, head of the Karelian chapter of Spravedlivost (Justice) human rights organization.
"The body of Andrei Kulagin, a resident of Petrozavodsk, was discovered on July 10 in a quarry near the Klyuchevaya neighborhood of Petrozavodsk. We do not have any official information that the killed man was a member of any human rights group," a source in Karelian law enforcement told Interfax on Wednesday.
He said Kulagin had a criminal record and was involved in several cases of misconduct.
At a prominent Karelian public organization Ravnovesiye (Balance) Interfax was told that Kulagin was known as a business figure. "He offered assistance as a member of the board of trustees of a service for corrective institutions," a spokesman said.
Earlier Spravedlivost announced that Kulagin who disappeared over two months ago had been the head of its Karelian chapter.
