Kyrgyz court sentences rapist whose actions sparked unrest near Bishkek

BISHKEK. Aug 28 (Interfax-AVN) - A resident of the Kyrgyz village of Petrovka has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a four-year-old girl.

"Twenty two-year-old Abdulla Osmonov, of the Petrovka village, has been found guilty of committing violence of sexual nature against four-year old A.Y. and causing her grandmother, O. Yeshchenko, to commit a suicide in the village of Petrovka, near Bishkek, in April 2009," the Kyrgyz Prosecutor General's Office said on Friday.

The crime led to pogroms against the houses of local Kurds. As a result of the unrest more than 15 houses were destroyed and several cars were burnt down. Law enforcement officers detained around 80 rioters.
