UN General Assembly offers unique chance to discuss int'l problems - envoy

MOSCOW. Sept 17 (Interfax-AVN) - The UN Security Council meeting attended by Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama will focus on nuclear disarmament, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin said in an interview published by the newspaper Izvestia.

"The Russian chief of state will attend the September 24 meeting of the UN Security Council chaired by U.S. President Barack Obama. The meeting will be dedicated to nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament," he said.

That would be the first meeting of chiefs of the majority of 192 UN member states in a long period, he said.

The main goal of the Russian delegation to the UN General Assembly session, which opened on September 15, would be the promotion of multilateral efforts in world politics, Churkin said.

There are some other priorities, as well, he said.

"Firstly, this is disarmament. We will once again promote Russian draft resolutions on information security and confidence building measures in space. We hope to reach a consensus," he said.

"Secondly, much attention will be given to the prevention and settlement of regional conflicts in the Middle East, African, Iraq and Africa," Churkin noted.
