Armenian opposition parties protest protocols on normalizing relations with Turkey

YEREVAN. Oct 7 (Interfax-AVN) - The leaders of eleven Armenian opposition parties have signed a document protesting the normalization of Armenia's relations with Turkey.

The paper has been signed, in particular, by the People's Party, the party New Times, Heritage, the Democratic Party, the Ramkavar-Azatakan party, the Armenian revolutionary federation Dashnaktsutyun, and others.

The document opposing the signing of Armenian-Turkish protocols is open to signature for other political groups.

Armen Rustamian of Dashnaktsutyun's supreme governing body said the document had been drawn up by the opposing parties together. "By signing this document, the parties expressed their disagreement with the signing of Armenian-Turkish protocols on normalizing bilateral relations and establishing diplomatic relations," he said.

The opposing parties have proposed amending the initialed protocols. "We decided today that the need to combine our efforts and start acting together is obvious. The purpose of this initiative is to combine efforts based on our identical position and suspend this process," Rustamian said.

After the signing, the protocols are to be submitted to the Armenian and Turkish parliaments for confirmation. Only two of the eleven parties that signed the protest, i.e. Heritage and Dashnaktsutyun, have parliamentary seats (7 and 16 respectively). The Armenian parliament is composed of 131 deputies.
