Armenian opposition party wants to prevent signing of Armenian-Turkish protocols

YEREVAN. Oct 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Armenian Dashnaktsutyun opposition party is willing to replace the current authorities so as to avoid the signing and ratification of the Armenian-Turkish protocols stabilizing bilateral relations and establishing diplomatic relations.

"We have a goal: to prevent the signing of the Armenian-Turkish protocols in their current form. If the texts of the initialed protocols are not modified, they should not be ratified and we are going to fight for it. We will use the possibility of a change of power, if that is necessary to attain the goal," Dashnaktsutyun faction leader Vaan Ovannisian said at a briefing on Friday.

There are political forces in Armenia, whose goal is to change the power, to attain which they might be willing to use important issues such as the Karabakh conflict and the Armenian-Turkish protocols, he said.

"Our goal is to change these protocols, and we will use a change of power as a method, if need be. But using national interests to change the power is not our way," said the party official.

Dashnaktsutyun and eleven other political parties are planning to hold a march and a rally on Friday to protest the signing of the Armenian-Turkish protocols.

According to various reports, the protocols are due to be signed in Zurich on October 10. Meanwhile, the Armenian Foreign Ministry has not formally confirmed this yet.
