Russia contributes millions of dollars to UN world food, social programs

NEW YORK, United Nations. Oct 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia's contribution to the World Food Program (WFP) in 2009 has reached US$24 million, Russian delegation representative Tatyana Zvereva said.

Russia shares the principles of global partnership in field of development and participates in the financing of the programs for the poorest countries, Zvereva said at the second committee of the 64th session of the UN General Assembly.

Russia has allocated $50 million to the World Bank's fund for supporting social programs in poor countries, the Russian official also said.

Russia is actively involved in helping to the landlocked countries, Zvereva also said. The unique geographic location of our country objectively enables it to serve as a link in the Eurasian transport infrastructure, the Russian official was quoted as saying by the UN News Service.

Currently, several transport projects are underway that allow Mongolia and China's northeastern provinces to get access to large railway and port facilities in Russia, South Korea and Japan, Zvereva said.
