U.S. does not recognize Nagorno-Karabakh but runs projects there - official

BAKU. Jan 29 (Interfax) - The U.S. administration has responded to an Azeri note over the decision to provide financial aid to Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry press secretary Elkhan Polukhov told Interfax.

"The note says that the U.S. administration never did and never will recognize Nagorno-Karabakh. The U.S. remains committed to the principle of being transparent and open with Azerbaijan about its projects implemented in Nagorno-Karabakh," Polukhov said.

"The reply note was received by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Washington on January 26," he said.

It was reported that Azeri Ambassador to the U.S. Yashar Aliyev sent a note of protest from the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry to the U.S. Department of State in mid-December 2009 over the decision by the U.S. Congress to allocate $8 million in financial aid to Nagorno-Karabakh in 2010.
