Delegates from five PACE countries sign draft resolution condemning glorification of Bandera

MOSCOW. Feb 4 (Interfax) - Several Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) officials are preparing a resolution condemning the attempts to glorify Nazism in Ukraine including the award of the Hero of Ukraine title to Stepan Bandera, Russian State Duma deputy Sergei Markov said.

"We are now working on an appropriate resolution in the Parliamentary Assembly. The resolution has already been signed by a huge number of people. We are not only talking about condemnation, but about looking into this practice," Markov said in a video conference on the Ukrainian presidential election.

Markov is a member of the PACE observer mission in the Ukrainian presidential election. The parliamentarian said the resolution was proposed by him and has already been signed by member of the delegations of five PACE countries (Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Italy, and the UK).

Markov said many of his colleagues in the EU "are outraged by Viktor Yushchenko's decree awarding the Hero of Ukraine title to Nazi criminal Stepan Bandera."

"Specifically, the Poles are very much irritated by the idea of glorifying Bandera," Markov said.

The overwhelming majority of Ukrainian citizens "categorically oppose the award of the Hero of Ukraine title to Nazi criminals and other doubtful historical personalities," Markov said.

Markov said he will seek the status of a special PACE rapporteur on attempts to glorify Nazism in Ukraine.
