MOSCOW. Feb 4 (Interfax) - Russia's Supreme Court has upheld the court ruling to sentence Russian citizen Abdulgani Ganishev to 14 years in prison for attempting to stage terror attacks in Sochi and Anapa.
The court verdict has taken effect, Supreme Court spokesman Pavel Odintsov told Interfax.
The Krasnodar Territorial Court in September 2009 found Ganishev guilty of illegally possessing weapons, ammunition and explosives, and preparing and attempting to stage terror attacks.
"The plotted terror attacks aimed to influence the authorities into canceling the Winter Olympic Games, set for 2014," an investigation established.
Ganishev, in collaboration with unidentified accomplices, planted a bomb in a garbage can in a shopping center in Sochi and set a time mechanism. Police spotted the bomb before the time mechanism set off an explosion.
The man was arrested when he was planting another bomb on a beach.
An investigation established that Ganishev arrived in Chechnya from Vilnius, Lithuania in late August 2007 and joined an illegal armed group, set up by warlord Doku Umarov.
The case was investigated by the Federal Security Service's investigation department.
