Georgia foreign minister renouncing Russian citizenship

TBILISI. Feb 24 (Interfax) - Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze, a dual Georgian-Russian citizen who announced in November 2009 that he had decided to renounce his Russian citizenship, on Monday submitted papers for abandoning his Russian nationality to the Russian authorities, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.

Vashadze handed the documents to the Swiss Embassy in Tbilisi, which has represented Russia in Georgia after the two countries severed their diplomatic relations in the wake of the August 2008 war between them.

"All the bureaucratic procedures for the renunciation of Russian citizenship are over, and now, under Russian law, the Russian authorities are to satisfy Vashadze's request," the ministry told Interfax.
