Russia wants NPT signatories to assume set of extra mandatory measures

MOSCOW. Feb 26 (Interfax) - Russia intends to make sure that a package of mandatory measures for all signatories to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (Non-Proliferation Treaty, or NPT) be adopted at an international NPT review conference in May.

The Russian Foreign Ministry board reaffirmed "Russia's determination to draw up a coordinated package of measures during an NPT review conference in 2010 to improve the NPT efficiency and make sure that all the signatories to the Treaty unconditionally comply with their obligations."

This must be done "on the basis of unity of its three fundamental components, i.e. non-proliferation, disarmament, and peaceful use of nuclear energy," it said.

Special significance should be attached to the "need to ensure the NPT's stable functioning and the preservation of its integrity as a pillar of collective security," it said.

"Modern challenges involving, in particular, the threat of nuclear materials falling into the hands of non-governmental entities can and must be eliminated based on the NPT," it said.

"Any attempts to revise the treaty and a decision on its unconditional and indefinite extension made in 1995 are unacceptable," it said.
