Ukraine leader to celebrate WWII victory in Moscow, Ukraine

MOSCOW. March 5 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said on Friday that he would be in Moscow on May 8 to join in the celebrations of the 65th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany and that he will take part in anniversary festivities in Ukraine the next day.

"I will definitely be in Moscow on the eve of May 9," Yanukovych told a news conference in the Kremlin after talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

"And on May 9 we will be celebrating in Kyiv, and there will be military parades in all hero cities of Ukraine," Yanukovych said.

Russia, Ukraine and Belarus "share the understanding that celebrating the victory is one of those steps that we must take together and that our people expect us to take," he said. "For this reason, those events will be synchronized to an extent."

Medvedev, for his part, described the Soviet Union's 1945 victory as "our common, very serious, event to celebrate."

"It is a celebration that brings us together and, I hope, will always do so," he said.
