MOSCOW. May 20 (Interfax) - The situation in Jalal-Abad, in south Kyrgyzstan, has been stabilized, chief of staff of the interim government Edil Baisalov has said.
"The situation is calm. There are no crowds in the streets. Army servicemen and law enforcement are patrolling the streets," he told AKIpress news agency.
In his opinion, the main danger lies in the spread of rumors and unreliable information. "The local population was agitated in the morning. Reports were deliberately circulated about dozens of people being killed and the seizure of buildings belonging to law enforcement bodies and arms stocks. Nothing of the kind happened or is happening," Baisalov who is in Jalal-Abad said.
"It is essential that these rumors are spread not only by the residents of Jalal-Abad and neighboring regions, but also to people in Bishkek, other regions and even other countries, including the Kyrgyz community in Moscow and other Russian cities. Hence the interim government is addressing all citizens not to be provoked and thus become unwilling participants in a campaign of instigating ethnic clashes," Baisalov said.
