Three additional multi-service armies to be formed in strategic directions - Gen. Staff

MOSCOW. June 8 (Interfax-AVN) - Three multi-service armies are to be formed as part of a plan to set up operational-strategic commands on the basis of military districts, Gen. Nikolai Makarov, the chief of the general staff, said.

"We decided to form additional multi-service armies in some of the strategic directions following a thorough assessment of the present-day challenges and threats. There will be three such armies," Makarov said at a session of the Federation Council's Defense and Security Committee on Tuesday.

One of the multi-service armies will be based in Chita, he said.

Six additional motorized infantry brigades will be set up and attached to the newly-established formations, Makarov said.
