MAKHACHKALA. June 16 (Interfax) - Four people have been killed after shooting at law enforcement officials outside Derbent, Dagestan, the Dagestani Interior Ministry told Interfax.
Federal Security Service (FSB) and Interior Ministry officers conducted a joint operation in Derbent and its suburbs on Wednesday morning. Police tried to stop a car outside Derbent at about 11:30 a.m local time. People in the car opened fire with automatic weapons, and four of them were killed by return fire. An investigative team is working at the scene now.
A Dagestani Interior Ministry spokesman said also that the militants who have been surrounded in the village of Kostek are suspected of a recent series of attacks on policemen in Dagestan.
A counterterrorist operation was imposed on Kostek at 7:45 a.m. Moscow time.
