MAKHACHKALA. June 16 (Interfax) - The bodies of six suspected militants killed in a police operation have been discovered under the rubble of a house in the village of Kostek in Dagestan, the republic's security department told Interfax.
"The active phase of the sweep is over. The rubble is being examined and cleared away. The bodies of six militants have been discovered so far," a spokesman said.
He also said that the suspected militants, killed in Derbent on Wednesday, could have been involved in an attack on police last night. Parts of the weapons seized from the police officers who were gunned down in Derbent were discovered in the militants' car.
Several incidents occurred in Dagestan on Wednesday, earlier reports said. A police squad came under fire and one of the police officers was killed and another was wounded. The assailants seized two rifles and two pistols.
Another skirmish took place in Derbent at 11 a.m. Four militants were killed and four police officers were wounded in the shooting, according to the Investigative Committee under the Prosecutor General's Office.
Meanwhile, a counter-terror regime was declared in the village of Kostek in Dagestan's Khasavyurt district at 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday. The Investigative Committee earlier reported that four law enforcement officers were killed and four others wounded when a house used by gunmen as a hideout was stormed.
