31 extremists handed lengthy prison sentences in Azerbaijan

BAKU. June 17 (Interfax) - The Azerbaijani Court for Grave Crimes on Thursday sentenced 31 members of a radical religious group to lengthy prison terms for involvement with an international terrorist chain.

"Some members of the group partially or fully admitted their participation in illegal armed groups in Russia," court chairman Azer Orudzhev said.

The court has proved that some of the defendants fought on the side of illegal armed groups in Russia's Ingushetia.

The evidence given by the defendants and witnesses indicates that some members of the group blew up a gas pipeline in Russia and carried weapons and ammunition to Azerbaijan through the territory of Georgia, the judge said.
