MOSCOW. June 17 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia needs a federal shipbuilding program for the period of up to 30 years in order to attain the goals of the state armament program, Deputy Director of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, Konstantin Makiyenko, told Interfax-AVN on Wednesday.
"The planning period of five to ten years, provided by state armament programs, is not sufficient as it takes long to design and build ships. It would be much better to make the planning for more than a decade in case of the Russian Navy," he said.
"For instance, it is possible to develop a federal shipbuilding program for the next 20 or 30 years," Makiyenko said.
"Modernization of Russian warships will require a transformation of industrial facilities," he said.
The United Shipbuilding Corporation has shipyards optimized to build strategic and multi-role nuclear-powered submarines (primarily Sevmash) and non-nuclear submarines (Admiralty Shipyards), the expert said.
At the same time, the corporation does not have modern shipyards for building new-generation corvettes, frigates and destroyers.
